Sunshine Blogger Award – Q&A

Insert second hand wringing acceptance speech here.

So this week I was nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award. Here follows my acceptance and response. First up, I need to outline the rules.

The Rules:

The rules of the Sunshine Blogger Award are as follows:

1.Thank the blogger who nominated you and include a link back to their blog. I was nominated by Those Uncloudy Days, so thank you and here’s the link. I really appreciate the nomination.

2.Compose a post on your blog and answer the 11 questions the blogger asked      you. This is it, read on for the answers.

3.Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions. Read on to the end of this post to see my new nominees and questions.

4.List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or your blog. Done, this is what this sections has been about.

The Questions To Be Answered:

1. What makes you happy? Spending time with my family. I am away for work a lot. In 2015 and 2016 I averaged about six months away a year. 2017 would have been the same had I not had my motorcycle accident (read about it here). Now that I work 300km away from the family home I’ll likely be away at least five days a week for 40 weeks a year (see Going The Distance for more on this). Spending time with my family is my happy place, they let me forget my broader concerns and focus on the things that are really important. Such as building the portal to the Netherworld in Minecraft (with Spud) or helping feed the wooden rocking horse (with Missy Moo) or simply having cuddles on the couch (with Baby J).

2.What three things would you change if you could? I’d be living with my family seven days a week instead of 300km away five days a week for work. I’d be really really ridiculously good looking (even more so than I already am). And lastly, I’d solve world climate change because you know I feel super sad that we are killing the polar bears….But seriously climate change is a terrifying man made catastrophe, we need to stop it.

3.Who is your inspiration? The former Australian Formula 1 driver, Mark Webber. That he succeeded to make it to the top of world motorsport despite not being from a lot of money, then stayed there for 10 years, persisting in the face of seemingly unrelenting bad luck for years and then to come back after crippling injuries sustained after being hit by car (while on a bicycle) to have his most successful seasons was an absolute inspiration to me. His accident and come back coincided with a time in my life when I had to¬†work my way back after¬†a series of failures. It was inspiring and relatable. Now that I’ve had my own serious road accident, his story is remains as inspiring to me as ever.

4.Where do you see yourself in ten years from now? Alive, happy, healthy and successful. I’m not going to list exact things here because then I’ll risk looking like a knob either if my aims are considered too lofty or too clich√©d, etc.

5.What advice would you give to someone wanting to start a blog? Great question, as I’ve only just started my blog less than two months it isn’t for me to profess advice in this area. However if anyone has any for me I’ll gladly take it.

6.What was your first blog post about? It was a basic introduction of who I am, what I’m about what my blog would be about, read it here.

7.If you could interview anyone for your blog who would it be and why? Probably my wife. She gets many mentions on here, it’d be good to give her a chance to voice her take on our life’s adventures. Also that way I don’t need to worry about scheduling or intellectual property issues or any of that kind of thing. I can also do the interview in my underwear on the couch, which is always a bonus.

8.What is your most memorable experience to date? This is a really hard question to answer and it depends on the context that frames it. I’ve had a lot of memorable experiences but the night I met my wife probably tops the list (not just because she’ll kill me otherwise). It had a feeling of destiny to it that had been gradually building for a couple of weeks before I met her (a feeling as though something big and life changing was coming my way).

9.Name three things you cannot live without? Neutrons, electrons and protons. See what I did there, #physicsjoke.

10.If you could visit one place in the world and blog about it, where would it be and why? Antarctica. A mate of mine spent a year working in Antarctica and blogged about it. Another mate’s Dad spent two six month stints there working at one of the research stations. I was supremely jealous of both of them. I’d love to go there for sheer adventure and isolation of it. I’d also love to go to space even though¬†that technically is not somewhere “in the world,” however my wife has forbidden space adventures. We’ve seen too many space based horror movies, she isn’t keen on me brining home any xenomorph spores.

11.What is your idea of a perfect weekend? The Friday night would be movie night with the kids. This usually involves pizza for dinner (in the lounge room) while watching a movie and having lollies for dessert. Once that is finished and the kids are in bed my wife and I would then have dessert (some form of café style cake with ice cream) and watch a couple of movies on Netflix, usually a horror followed by an Adam Sandler movie. The Adam Sandler movie is an essential part of the routine because they are light hearted, appeal to our sense of humour and help to undo any residual anxiety induced from the horror movie allowing us to get to sleep easily. This is the movie going equivalent of having sorbet to cleanse your pallet after eating a meal.

The Saturday will see us having a sleep in followed by a casual breakfast at home with the dance off with the kids. We’d then head out on some sort of half day outing to one of the local places that we like or try somewhere new. Dinner is a delicious salmon dinner that my wife makes with crispy skin, asparagus, sweet potato mash and cherry tomatoes. We then watch yet more movies on Netflix while unwinding on the couch.

Sunday starts with another sleep in, followed by family breakfast. This is usually pancake day and the kids love to help. Spud does the flipping, Missy Moo does the pouring and Wifey supervises (i.e guides the pouring). Another dance off or some adventures in Minecraft follows. Eventually we’ll get ourselves organised and head out somewhere for a casual Sunday lunch. We don’t like big meals so this usual entails a bowl of chips to share, maybe a small sweet treat and a drink each. We like trying new places for this and like finding new interesting and quaint places. Sunday dinner is usually something quick and easy like homemade burgers that are both a delicious and healthier take on¬† a takeaway favourite and also that generate little mess.
